How to Write an Enclosure in an Email and an Application Letter

Copy-paste examples of enclosure lines for application letters and the matching wording for emails, including single documents, lists and counts.

By Resume Creator Team · Published · 2 min read

To write an enclosure in an application letter, type "Enclosure:" or "Enclosures:" below your signature and list each document on its own line. In an email, skip the notation and say "attached" in the body. The examples below cover both, so you can copy the one that fits.

New to the term? Start with what an enclosure in a cover letter means, then come back here for wording.

Step by step: enclosure in an application letter

  1. Finish the letter. Write your closing, such as "Sincerely," or "Yours faithfully,".
  2. Type your name. Leave space for a signature if the letter will be printed.
  3. Skip one line. Leave a blank line below your name.
  4. Add the notation. Write "Enclosure:" for one item or "Enclosures:" for several.
  5. List the documents. Put each one on its own line, with the resume first.
  6. Check the count. Every listed document must be in the envelope or file set.

Several files

Please find attached my resume, degree certificate and a reference list. I am happy to share anything else you need.

Pointing to the strongest file

My resume is attached, along with a sample audit report that shows how I reduced month-end close time by two days.

Words you can reuse

  • "I have enclosed my resume for your review."
  • "Please find my resume and references enclosed."
  • "My supporting documents are listed below."
  • "The attached resume details my experience in more depth."

Use "enclosed" for letters and "attached" for emails. The difference is covered in enclosure vs attachment.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing "Enclosures" for a single document.
  • Listing a document you forgot to attach.
  • Putting the enclosure line above your signature.
  • Using an enclosure line in the middle of an email.
  • Sending files with names like final-final2.pdf.
