The professional summary sits at the top of your resume, right under your name. Recruiters often read it first to decide whether the rest is worth their time. A strong summary tells them who you are, what you're good at and why you fit, in about three sentences.
A simple formula
[Role/identity] with [experience] in [area]. Known for [top strengths], with results such as [one or two achievements]. Looking to [what you want next / value you'll bring].
You don't need every part every time, but this structure keeps you focused on what matters.
What makes a summary work
- Specific, not generic. "Product manager with 8 years in B2B payments" beats "dynamic professional".
- Evidence. One or two numbers make your claims credible.
- Tailored. Mirror the role's language. If the job asks for "stakeholder management", use that phrase if it's true for you.
- Short. Two to four sentences, 40-80 words.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buzzwords with nothing behind them: "results-driven", "passionate", "team player", "go-getter".
- First-person overload: "I am a..., I have..., I want...". (UK personal statements are an exception, since they're usually written in the first person.)
- Repeating your job list. The summary should highlight, not duplicate.
- Talking only about what you want. Balance your goals with what you offer.

Summary, objective or personal statement?
- Summary: best for most candidates with some experience.
- Objective: better for freshers and career changers. Focus on the role you want and the strengths you bring.
- Personal statement: the UK name for a summary, usually written in the first person. Our UK CV template labels it this way automatically.
