UK CV vs US Resume vs European CV: Key Differences Explained

Applying abroad? A UK CV, a US resume and a European CV follow different rules on length, photos, personal details, spelling and page size. Here's what changes and how to adapt yours.

By Resume Creator Team · Published · Updated · 3 min read

"CV" and "resume" are often used interchangeably, but the documents employers expect vary from country to country. If you're applying internationally, a few adjustments can make your application look local and avoid details that might work against you.

The US resume

  • Short and targeted. One page for most candidates; two only with substantial experience.
  • No photo, age, marital status or nationality. US employers avoid this information because of anti-discrimination laws.
  • US Letter page size (8.5 × 11 inches).
  • Starts with a summary focused on what you offer.
  • Achievement-driven bullets with numbers.

The UK CV

  • Up to two pages of A4.
  • Personal statement at the top: three to five sentences in the first person about who you are and what you're looking for.
  • No photo, date of birth or marital status. UK employers generally advise against them to avoid bias.
  • "Employment history" is a common heading for work experience.
  • British spelling: organise, programme, colour.
  • References: "References available on request" is optional and increasingly omitted.

Our UK CV template follows these conventions, and setting your region to United Kingdom hides the photo and date-of-birth fields automatically.

The European CV

Conventions vary across Europe, but some patterns are common:

  • Europass-style structure is widely recognised, with labelled sections for work experience, education, language skills and digital skills.
  • Language levels using CEFR (A1-C2), for example "English: C1 (Proficient)".
  • Nationality and work permit status are often included, especially for international applicants.
  • Photos are common in some countries (such as Germany) and discouraged in others (such as the Netherlands or the UK). Check local norms for the specific country.
  • Numeric dates like 03/2024 are common.

The EU CV template is inspired by the Europass structure with a cleaner, ATS-friendly design.

The Indian resume

Indian resumes sit between US and UK styles. One to two pages, A4, with a summary or (for freshers) a career objective. Some recruiters ask for personal details such as date of birth, and campus recruiters often expect Class X and XII scores. If you're a graduate, read our resume format for freshers.

What about academic CVs?

In the US and UK alike, an academic CV is a different document: a complete record of publications, teaching, grants and talks, with no strict page limit. Use Scholar or Research for academic applications.

How to adapt your resume for another country

  1. Change the page size: Letter for the US, A4 elsewhere.
  2. Remove or add personal details to match local norms.
  3. Rename the opening section: summary, personal statement or profile.
  4. Adjust spelling and date formats.
  5. Convert terms that might not translate: CGPA vs GPA, "Class XII" vs "high school", local job titles.
  6. Re-check length against local expectations.

In Resume Creator, changing the Region in the Design tab handles page size, date format, the Resume/CV label on your download and which optional personal fields are offered. One set of content can produce a US resume, a UK CV and a European CV.

Keep it ATS-friendly everywhere

Whatever the country, applicant tracking systems prefer clean, single-reading-order layouts with standard headings. Read how ATS reads your resume for a full checklist.

The bottom line

The core of a good resume (clear structure, relevant achievements and tailored keywords) is universal. The details change: length, page size, photos, personal information and spelling. Adapt those to the country you're applying to and your application will look like it belongs. Pick a template and switch regions in one click.
