Resume Format for Freshers: A Complete Guide with Examples

No work experience? No problem. Here's the best resume format for freshers, what to put in each section, a sample structure, and the mistakes that cost graduates interviews.

By Resume Creator Team · Published · Updated · 3 min read

Writing your first resume feels hard because the usual advice assumes you have years of experience. As a fresher, your evidence lives somewhere else: in your education, projects, internships and activities. The right format puts that evidence first.

The best resume format for freshers

Use a single-column, reverse-chronological format with this section order:

  1. Contact details
  2. Career objective (2-3 lines)
  3. Education
  4. Projects
  5. Internships / work experience
  6. Skills
  7. Certifications
  8. Achievements and activities
  9. Languages (optional)

Keep it to one page. Recruiters screening hundreds of graduates appreciate a resume they can scan in seconds.

What to write in each section

Contact details

Full name, phone, professional email, city, and links to LinkedIn and GitHub or a portfolio if you have them. You don't need your full address.

Career objective

As a fresher, a short objective works better than a summary. Name the role you want and one or two strengths.

Final-year Computer Science student with hands-on full-stack development experience from two internships and academic projects. Looking for a graduate software engineer role where I can contribute to production code from day one.

Avoid generic lines like "seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation".

Education

List your degree first, then earlier qualifications.

  • Degree, specialisation, institution, city, years
  • CGPA or percentage (if it's strong, show it clearly)
  • Class XII and Class X with board and percentage (many Indian recruiters expect these for campus roles)

Projects

This is where freshers stand out. For each project include:

  • what you built and why,
  • the technologies used,
  • a measurable result or scale (users, accuracy, performance).

CampusConnect: Event Management App (React, Node.js, MongoDB) Built a web app used by 1,500+ students to discover and register for college events; implemented role-based access and QR-code check-in.

Internships and work experience

Include internships, part-time jobs, freelance work and teaching assistant roles. Write them like real jobs: start with an action verb and show results.

Skills

Group your skills so they're easy to scan:

  • Programming: Java, Python, JavaScript
  • Web: React, Node.js, MySQL
  • Tools: Git, Docker, Figma

Only list skills you'd be comfortable being interviewed on.

Certifications

Online courses and certifications (NPTEL, Coursera, AWS, Google) show initiative. Include the issuer and date.

Achievements and activities

Hackathons, competitions, club leadership, volunteering, sports at a competitive level: anything that shows initiative, teamwork or leadership.

Sample fresher resume structure

Career Objective: 2 lines Education: B.Tech CSE (CGPA 8.9), Class XII (92.4%) Projects: 2 projects with tech stack and results Work Experience: 1 internship with 1-2 bullets Skills: 3 grouped lines Certifications: 2 entries Achievements: hackathon finalist, coding club lead Languages: English, Hindi, Gujarati

Should freshers add a photo or personal details?

It depends on where you're applying. Many Indian employers don't require a photo, and international employers usually prefer you leave it out because it can introduce bias and isn't useful to an ATS. In Resume Creator, photo and personal details such as date of birth are off by default; switch them on only if a recruiter asks.

Common fresher resume mistakes

  • Two or three pages. One strong page beats three thin ones.
  • Generic objectives that could apply to any job.
  • Listing duties, not results. "Worked on a website" says little; "Built a booking page that reduced manual bookings by 60%" says a lot.
  • Skill ratings (stars, bars, percentages). They're meaningless to recruiters and break ATS parsing.
  • Fancy layouts with tables or graphics that scramble when parsed. Read how ATS reads your resume.
  • Unprofessional email addresses. Use a simple firstname.lastname format.
  • Typos. Proofread, then ask a friend to proofread again.

Campus placements vs off-campus applications

For on-campus drives and mass recruiters, academic scores and certifications are often screened first, and our Campus template presents them prominently under "Academic Qualifications". For off-campus applications, internships and job portals, projects usually matter more, which suits the Fresher template.

That's normal for freshers. See what to do if you don't have references for practical alternatives.
